The bank serves a broad retail customer base through branches and a mobile app. As demand for digital account opening grew, it needed bank customer onboarding automation that would not compromise KYC and AML requirements.
Account opening passed through four hands: the branch or digital channel, operations, compliance, then operations again for activation. At each stage the same documents were re-checked manually: civil ID, salary certificate, proof of address, and bank statements for customers with variable income.
The consequences were clear:
- An average of three working days to open a standard retail account.
- A noticeable share of digital applications stalled waiting for a missing document, and some customers abandoned them.
- Compliance reviewed every application at the same depth, however low its risk.
- Data was keyed twice, into CRM and then core banking, with errors in names and addresses.
Management wanted a faster customer experience with stronger, not weaker, controls, and a record that makes any regulatory query easy to answer.
